Hawks Lose in 'Regional'

The Seahawks dropped a 7-5 decision to Plainedge in the first round of the regional bracket before being eliminated by Bellmore JFK 1-0 in game two.

Hawks Drop Finale

The Hawks dropped their season finale 6-4 in nine innings to South Side to finish 10-6-2. They finished in third place and are now seeded 12th in the Nassau County 'A' playoffs which begin this Saturday. Their opponent will be Plainedge whom the Hawks played in a Non League game on April 24th.

Hawks Crush 'Clones

For the second time in a week the Seahawks sticks posted a 10+ hit assault on opposing pitchers as they cruised to an 11-6 win over South Side to maintain their tenuous hold of second place in the Conference A-I standings.

Eight of the Hawks nine starters had a least one basehit. Mike Catanese had three singles. Ryan Hensley, Andrew Ris and Erick Vilchez each went 2 for 4. John Cimilluca had two singles while Anthony Catapano, Joe Marinello, Rob Kelly, Mike Castel and Nick Conte also had one hit to add to the final totals.

Mike Rutigliano earned the win for the Hawks pitching staff as he went five innings allowing just three hits and one earned run.

The Hawks return home tomorrow for the regular season finale before Saturday's opening playoff game. Time for that game is Tentatively scheduled for 12:00PM. Site and opponent has not yet been determined.

First Lost in a Cyclone

Finding themselves in the unenviable task of playing spoiler the South Side Cyclones excelled in their new role as they dealt the Seahawks a crushing 7-4 loss that officially ended the Hawks quest for a Division Title.

Hard luck loser Frank Licciardi was removed after just three and two third innings as the Hawks defense behind him found themselves a day late and dollar short as three errors led to five unearned runs and a whole lot of question marks about the resolve of the Seahawks defensive unit.

At the dish, despite getting 10 hits the Hawk bat attack again was stricken with 'Small Village Syndrome' as eight men were left on base. Coupled with the porous defense the left on base failure to get a clutch hit malady really stuck in the craw of the Hawks offensive game.

Bright spots on the day were John Cimilluca who tacked on two more hits to his team leading total and Rob Kelly, who singled, tripled and scored.

The regrouping Hawks return to South Side on Tuesday as they will now spend the next two days jockeying for an exact playoff spot. Game time is 4:30PM.

Hawks Trounce Trojans

After five weeks of battling through the Conference A-1 traffic jam the Seahawks finally stamped their post season ticket with a 13-5 trouncing of the Trojans of Garden City to help them earn a school record 9th consecutive playoff appearance.

Joe Davide and Erick Vilchez led the offensive attack as they combined to account for eight of the 12 Seahawk runs. Davide's career day included a 3 for 3 with three doubles and a whopping six RBI's. Vilchez added two RBI's on a 4 for 4 day at the plate. Also getting in on the hitting fun was John Cimilluca, who added two more hits to his growing resume, Andrew Ris, who had a double and a single, Rob Kelly, who had two singles, and Anthony Catapano and John Heyer, who both had monstrous doubles to round out the 15 hit assault.

On the mound, Heyer, after entering in the second inning, went 5 and one third innings to pick up his first Varsity win as he allowed just one earned run on six hits. In the field, the shortstop-2nd base tandem of Ris and Cimilluca played flawless defense as they registered seven putouts and 13 assists. Centerfielder, Nick Conte, who also had a safety squeeze bunt RBI, hauled in six flyballs to keep the skies clear for Hawks pitching.

The 9-4-2 Hawks sit alone in second place just one game out of first but five points, due to ties, behind Bellmore JFK for the rights to the catbird seat in the A-1 perch. The Hawks will need a sweep of South Side starting on Monday for a first place finish.

Hawks Rally Knot Enough

Showing good energy and a never say die attitude the Seahawks rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the top of the 7th inning to take a 5-4 lead that they couldn't hang onto as they were tied in the bottom frame on a controversial call in a game vs the Garden City Trojans that ended in a 5-5 stalemate after eight innings.

Struggling to find the strike zone as well as failing to impress the man in blue behind the dish, Hawks starting pitcher Erick Vilchez yielded three walks and one unearned run as the Trojans grabbed a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Failing to score with a runner on third with no outs in the second was slightly answered in the third inning as Andrew Ris' two out single scored Mike Catanese to make it 3-1.

Taking over in the bottom half of the inning, Joe Nicoletti put forth his second consecutive strong showing on the hill as he went four innings with three strikeouts and just two runs allowed as he kept the Hawks within striking distance.

Despite stranding 10 men on base the Hawks did just enough in the 7th when they took advantage of some shaky Trojans defense to spark the rally. Catanese reached on a two base throwing error, John Cimilluca (2 for 4) singled, Ris walked, Anthony Catapano hit a smash to third that ricocheted off the third baseman down left field towards out of bounds territory. Catanese and Cimilluca easily scored and after two separate manager arguments Ris was also allowed to score when the ball went out of play to tie it. Spano ran for Catapano and reached third on a groundout. John Heyer was then intentionally walked to face Joe Davide who promptly dropped a bunt base hit that fooled Spano who eventually made his way to the plate where he was ruled safe for a one run lead.

Moving to the 7th Nicoletti hit a speed bump as the first two hitters reached. Returning from right field Vilchez handled a sacrifice bunt before a walk loaded the bases. Catapano handled a grounder that he threw to Davide for the forceout at home before the biggest call of the day went against the Hawks as Vilchez' full count pitch was called a ball to even it at 5-5. The next man flew out to right and both teams failed to make anything happen in the 8th as darkness settled in.

With the tie the Hawks return home on Thursday before their final series next week against South Side. The 8-4-2 Hawks still control their only destiny for two of their pre-season goals as one more win will gain them a school record 9th consecutive playoff appearance and if they can right the ship and win four straight a division title is still within reach.

Trojans Blank Hawks

A 90 minute pitcher's duel saw the Seahawks get the short end of the stick as they fell 2-0 to the Garden City Trojans in the series opener.

Frank Licciardi went six innings allowing just one earned run in a losing cause.

Andrew Ris and Rob Kelly had the Hawks only two hits. Game two is tomorrow at Garden City.

Hawks Exorcise Devils 3-1

Frank Licciardi and Erick Vilchez combined on a five hitter as the Seahawks defeated the Plainedge Red Devils 3-1 in a Non-League contest held at Farmingdale State College.

Licciardi gave way with one out and a man on second in the top of the fifth. After an extended at bat Vilchez induced a line drive that was snared by a leaping Andrew Ris at shortstop that he easily tossed to John Cimilluca at second base for a double play. From there Vilchez cruised to his team leading fourth save as he pitched two and two thirds of scoreless and hitless relief.

Ris also led at the plate as he went 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI. Cimilluca tacked on a double, a single and a run scored. Anthony Catapano singled with a Sac Fly. Nick Conte added a run scoring single while Vilchez and Rob Kelly also had hits for the Hawks.

The idle Hawks complete their scrimmage week starting tomorrow vs VS North. Game time is 4:00PM.

Seahawks Hold Off New Hyde in 8.

The roller coaster ride of a third game finally ended in eight innings as the Seahawks held off a very game New Hyde Park club 8-6 to sweep the series and head to their bye week with a share of first place in the Conference A-I standings.

Starting Pitcher Erick Vilchez pulled off a statistical rarity as he came in to save the game for Joe Nicoletti after Vilchez exited after five innings with a then at the time 6-3 lead which was squandered in the sixth inning. Nicoletti snagged his first career Varsity win as he went two innings on just one hit and a Houdini-like escape from a one out bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh that eventually got the Hawks offense a stay of execution which they promptly capitalized on in the top of the eighth.

On offense, Anthony Catapano powered his way to a four RBI day on a 3 for 4 showing at the plate. Rob Kelly added two RBI's on a 2 for 4 day which included a huge two out single in the fourth to tie it at 3-3. John Cimilluca had two singles while Andrew Ris did the same. Ris also held court in the field as his barehanded gem in the bottom of the sixth as well as his heads up assist on a lead runner in the fifth kept several Gladiator rallies from developing.

In a game that they simply had to have before an 11 day layoff the Seahawks, to their full credit, bent but didn't break. All nine starters found ways to get on base and when a big pitch or big defensive play was needed the Hawks found it. At 8-3-1 the Hawks will rest for a week before heading to arch rival's house Garden City in a week five clash. Game time will be 4:30PM on April 28th at Garden City.

However, the Hawks will first enjoy a Non-League treat as they head to Farmingdale State College next Tuesday 6:30PM game time to meet Plainedge. Please see schedule page for next week's scrimmages.

Seahawk Bats Spark Rout

It may have taken more than half the season but the Seahawks bats finally found their groove in an 18 hit onslaught that sparked a 10-4 rout of New Hyde Park in game two of their three game set.

Andrew Ris led the way with three singles and three RBI's. Mike Catanese also had three hits to go with an RBI. Joe Davide went two for two with a pair of RBI's. Anthony Catapano and Erick Vilchez each mashed two doubles while John Cimilluca, John Heyer, Rob Kelly, James Molloy, Nick Conte and Luke Spano all chipped in with singles.

Ryan Hensley scuffled his way through four innings of work to get the win as he allowed just one earned run. John Heyer pitched three innings of relief, permitting just one earned run, for his first career save.

The Hawks finish the series tomorrow at 10:00AM at New Hyde Park.

Hawks Rally Past 'Park'

Andrew Ris' sixth inning single scored both Mike Catanese and John Cimilluca to tie it, and on the next pitch Anthony Catapano laced a single to right to plate Ris who had moved to third on a two base error as the Hawks rallied past the New Hyde Park Gladiators 5-4 in the opening game of the series.

Ris also had a sacrifice fly two innings earlier as he returned to the diamond for the first time all season with a three RBI game. Fellow Captains Frank Licciardi, six innings only two earned runs allowed, and Erick Vilchez, one scoreless inning, combined on the hill to get the win as Vilchez garnered his second save of the season.

Nick Conte's bunt base hit sparked a two run inning in the fourth that was aided by three walks by the Gladiators pitcher. In the field, Catapano's Golden Glove at first base personally saved the Hawks at least three runs as the Hawk defense is still working on shoring up the leather.

The Hawks host the Gladiators next at home on Wednesday. Game time is 10:00AM.

Hawks Blanked 5-0

Unable to shake off the residue from the previous day the Seahawks sleeping bats stranded nine more runners as they fell to the Wantagh Warriors 5-0 in the series finale. Second and third as well as two different bases loaded situations were wasted as the punchless Hawks offense continues to search for the go to guy as they were only able to muster four hits.

In the field, Wantagh took advantage of the Hawks inability to field two bunts as well failure to turn a double play which gave the Warriors a chance to put up a four spot in the second inning which they never looked back from.

On the hill Mike Rutigliano went four innings allowing four earned runs with four strikeouts on 76 pitches. Relieving him was Tom Sabatino who made his high school debut on the mound. Sabatino finished with no runs allowed on two hits in three innings of action.

The Hawks begin the vacation week with a game at District rival New Hyde Park on Monday morning at 10:00AM.

Seahawks 'Lose' 4-4

Despite an impressive dual performance by pitchers Ryan Hensley and Erick Vilchez, the Seahawks let one slip through their fingers as they tied Wantagh 4-4 in a game called because of darkness after eight innings.

The tie felt much like a loss for the Hawks as they battled back from a 2-0 deficit on a two run single by John Cimilluca, an RBI single by Rob Kelly and a solo blast off the bat of Vilchez to grab a 4-2 lead that they brought to the fifth inning. In that inning Vilchez relieved Hensley, who went 4 and a third allowing three earned runs, and promptly turned a first and second situation into what appeared to be the final out of the inning. Unfortunately, it didn't go that way as the Hawks porous defense reared its ugly head again as they committed three more errors one of which allowed the tying run to come around and score.

However, placing the blame on one defensive gaffe would then bailout the offense which simply put: stranded a small village as 12 men were left on base as the 'clutch' hits never came much like it didn't in the first loss to Bellmore two weeks ago. Sadly Vilchez' three plus innings of no hit ball went for naught as the 5-2-1 Hawks return tomorrow to close out the series.

Seahawks Defeat Warriors 4-3

Rob Kelly's two-out, two run double in the bottom of the 6th held up as the game winner as the Seahawks defeated the Wantagh Warriors 4-3 in the series opener.

On the play, both Pinch Runners Tom Sabatino, running for John Heyer, who reached on an error, and James Carr, running for Anthony Catapano(Single and an RBI), who walked came around to score. Pinch hitter Ryan Hensley worked a walk on the previous at bat to set the table for Kelly's heroics.

Frank Licciardi garnered his second win of the season as he battled all seven innings allowing just four hits with two earned runs and 6 strikeouts.

For the 5-2 Hawks it was a hard earned bounce back win from Saturday's disappointment. The Hawks head to Wantagh tomorrow for their only visit. Game time is 4:45PM.

Saturday Slip Up

After just one day the Seahawks spot at the top of the Conference A-I standings has been erased as the Hawks put forth their biggest clunker of the season in a 10-5 wipeout at Bellmore. The win also gave the Cougars the series deciding second game which may play a huge factor come playoff time.

The Cougars grabbed an early 2-0 lead on three first inning hits and the first of four Hawk errors before the offense answered the call as John Heyer sparked a four run rally for the Hawks in the next frame with his second monstrous Home Run in as many games. Unfortunately that would be the end of the good run as the Cougars batted around to score seven times to take the lead for good at 9-4 in the bottom half of the inning. In the inning the Hawks booted two more balls, failed to turn a double play and simply didn't make the pitches when they needed to. It was fundamentally not a good performance all around.

Additionally, it was a disappointing end to what had been up to this point a solid week. The 4-2 Seahawks will look to rebound asap as they return home on Monday to face perennial powerhouse Wantagh in the first of three in yet another crucial early season series. Game time is 4:30PM.

Seahawks Sweep Jays

After a few near misses early in the game the Seahawks offense finally broke through in a six-run fourth inning as they cruised to a 12-2 win over Jericho earning themselves a series sweep to help move their record to 4-1 on the season.

Leadoff hitter Nick Conte set the table all game long as he went 3 for 3 with four runs scored and three stolen bases. Anthony Catapano laced two singles to finish 2 for 3 with 3 RBI's. John Heyer mashed a fifth inning Grand Slam to highlight the 13 hit attack. Joe Marinello tripled and singled while Mike Catanese, Rob Kelly, John Cimilluca, James Molloy and Erick Vilchez (Double) all contributed base knocks.

Mike Rutigliano snagged his 2nd win of the week as he went four innings with six strikeouts no runs allowed on just three hits. Joe Nicoletti finished up the final frame in the five inning shortened game.

The Hawks busy week continues tomorrow with a home scrimmage vs Roslyn before they head to Bellmore to wrap up their week one series on Saturday. Game time is 11:00AM @ Bellmore.

Seahawks Go For A Walk

Taking advantage of eight free passes and two hit batsmen, the Seahawks walked to an easy win over the Jericho Jayhawks in game two of their three game set 10-4.

Nick Conte (3 runs scored), Mike Catanese (3 runs scored), John Cimilluca, Erick Vilchez and Joe Marinello all walked and scored while Matt Kurta posted a one for one day with three RBI's. Anthony Catapano added two RBI's.

Ryan Hensley earned the win as he went six innings with 9 strikeouts and just six hits allowed. Joe Nicoletti pitched a scoreless seventh to close it out.

The Hawks shoot for the series sweep on Thursday. Game time is 4:30PM.

Seahawks Edge Jayhawks in Eight

Erick Vilchez, fresh off a sparkling outfield assist in the fourth inning, came on in relief of winning pitcher Mike Rutigliano in the bottom of the 8th with runners on 1st and 2nd and promptly shut the door on any rally plans as he snagged a liner before striking out the Jayhawks final hitter to give the Seahawks a hard fought 3-2 win over Jericho.

Joe Davide's two out single in the top of the frame held up as the game winner as his hit plated John Heyer who started the rally with a one out single earlier in the inning. Both Heyer and Davide as well as Rob Kelly all had two hits to pace the offense. Kelly also added a sac fly in sixth that gave the Seahawks a 2-0 lead at the time.

Starting pitcher Frank Licciardi pitched brilliantly for six innings allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out seven before giving way to Rutigliano who gave up just one hit in an inning an a third of work.

The Seahawks return home Wednesday and Thursday vs Jericho. Game time is 4:30PM.

Late Rally Falls Short

With 2nd and 3rd and just one out in the 7th the Seahawks, as had been the case all game long, couldn't find the right mojo as their last inning rally fell short in a 4-2 loss to Bellmore to even the series at one game apiece.

In a odd reversal of fortunes this time it was the Seahawks who lost while allowing just three hits. Unlike yesterday when the Cougars didn't take advantage of some shoddy Seahawk defense this time they did as two of the three free passes issued by pitcher Erick Vilchez came around to score on a third inning triple that eluded a diving Joe Marinello in right field. Moments later the first of three Hawk errors also came back to bite them as the clunkers eventually led to two unearned runs.

So despite out-hitting the Cougars ten to three the Hawks were felled by a sure-fire baseball recipe for disaster as walks came around to score, misplays led to runs, poor baserunning and missed signs neutralized big innings and lastly failure to get a clutch hit as ten men were left stranded on base including a mind boggling one in at least every inning.

On the hill, Vilchez went six innings, striking out six while walking three to go along with just two earned runs and three hits allowed.

At the plate, Mike Catanese and John Cimilluca each had three hits to pace the offense. Vilchez, two singles, Anthony Catapano and John Heyer added the other hits.

The Hawks return to Bellmore on Saturday in the rubber match. Game time is 1:00PM....weather permitting as usual.

Hawks Cool Off Cougars

Battling what hopes to be the last cold snap of a long snowy winter, the frozen Seahawks did just enough to get the job done as they edged the Bellmore JFK Cougars 4-2 in the Conference A-I opener for both teams.

Rob Kelly led the charge with the stick as he belted a Home Run and a two run scoring double to account for all of the earned runs for the Seahawks attack. Mike Catanese eeked out the other hit to go along with four stolen bases to help the Hawks 'steal' a run in the first on a throwing error.

In addition to mustering out just three hits, the Hawks defense found themselves in the thawing out mode as they committed a half dozen clunkers to put runners in scoring position in five of the seven innings that Bellmore batted.

Fortunately pitcher and Senior Captain Frank Licciardi picked up his teammates when he needed to as he constantly worked out of jams to keep the Cougars at bay. Licciardi went the distance, striking out six, walking just one, while allowing no earned runs and more importantly staying ahead in nearly every at bat.

The Hawks now head on the road for two straight at Bellmore starting tomorrow at 4:45pm as they look to win the series.
