Curtain Closes on 2010 Season

With the Seahawks just one strike away from forcing a third and decisive game in their Semi-Final playoff series, two consecutive missed opportunities to close it out in the field led to an eventual two run single that tied the game for Calhoun who eventually won it in the 8th, 4-3, to eliminate the Hawks and send them home for the Summer.
It was a cruel and crushing way to end it for the Hawks who had numerous chances to blow the game open but again never got the big hit as they left runners in scoring position in seven of the eight innings.  Just one inning with a clutch hit would have made the last inning's misplays a moot point.  But the lack of clutch hits and uneven defensive play was unfortunately a consistent albatross that kept the Hawks from reaching their full potential all season long.
To their credit though, one year removed from a Finals appearance, the Hawks, despite replacing two starting pitchers and six defensive positions, completed a gritty season in the powerful Ability Based AA-I League which saw them come in Third Place Overall.  That success should provide a foundation to work off of as many of this year's team returns in 2011 to finish the task at hand.
Still this one will sting a while as yet another John Daddino gem was wasted as he shut down the number one hitting team in all of Nassau County for 6 2/3 innings.  He struck out 13 batters while allowing no earned runs.  Worse of a sting however, goes out to the valiant Seniors: John Augello, Al Gentile, Paul Collazo and the Marino Brothers Mike and Joe who gave everything they had and were leaders and great teammates throughout the year.  Their hard work and leadership allowed them to be the most successful Carey Baseball players in the history of the school as a Finals and Semi-Finals appearance will be a wonderful memory for them as they close out their Carey career.
A special thanks to all of the remaining players, as well as all of the families that came down and supported us this year.  Indoor workouts/weightlifting begin in 193 days.  See you then!!!

Colts Kick Seahawks

For the second week in a row, and a mind boggling eighth time of the year, the Seahawks dropped the opening game of a series.  This time it was a 15-9 slugfest loss at the hands of the Calhoun Colts in the AA County Semi-Finals that had all the earmarks of bad defensive baseball.
The Seahawks pitching was, to be honest, abysmal, as seven walks and constant pitching from behind counts had the Colts already potent offense licking their chops.  Throw in four more errors to go with four pitching changes and you have another backs against the wall dilemma for the Hawks.
If there was a bright spot it can be directed at the Hawks offense who managed to score nine times against the Colts top two pitchers.  Sophomore call up Harry Smith and Mike Marino had their first Home Runs of the season as they went back to back in the second to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead that they would unfortunately relinquish, but it was an impressive showing nonetheless.
Win or lose the Hawks will wrap up their 2010 home part of the schedule tomorrow as they looked to extend their season again.
Semi-Finals for Hawks

Racing out to a 10-2 lead the Seahawks held off a furious late rally by Mepham to help edge the Pirates 10-8 and earn themselves a second straight trip to the County Semi-Finals.  And the for the second consecutive year the Hawks came from down a game to win two games to one over the Mepham offensive juggernaut that fell just short as Kyle DeMeo put out the fire late to record his second save of the season.
DeMeo replaced Jesse Montalto whose statline doesn't do justice to the gritty effort he put forth as he earned his third straight win to advance the Hawks to Merrick where they will take on the Calhoun Colts starting Monday 4:45PM.
On offense the Hawks returned to their long ball ways as DeMeo and Nick Vilchez accounted for six of the ten runs as each hit long Home Runs over the left field fence.  DeMeo's Grand Slam in the second made it 7-0 and Vilchez's bomb made it 9-2 in the fifth.  Mike Marino stayed hot as he raked two more singles to finish the series at .636.  All nine of the starters found success in the hit column as Tom Rydzewski, Anthony Licata, Joe Marino, Harry Smith, DeMeo and Vilchez all had one hit while Marino, Ron Licciardi and Al Gentile had two apiece.  Gentile's two run double in the second plated the first of the Hawks seven runs in the inning.
On defense the Hawks top play of the game was an inning ending double play that negated a bases loaded and no one on rally in the fifth that was probably the turning point of the game.
The Hawks will rest tomorrow before revving it up again as they prepare for another classic AA battle.

Seahawks Still Flying!

With the season on the line, John Daddino delivered a masterful gem going 6 1/3 innings allowing just two hits while striking out 14 to lead the Hawks to a 5-1 win over Mepham.  The win forces a do or die rubber game tomorrow at Carey with a spot in the Semi-Finals hanging in the balance.
The low scoring game at Mepham saw the Hawks do just enough early on as they scored four times in the first two innings.  Mike Marino (3 for 4) singled and stole second before Tom Rydzewski unselfishly got him to third where he scored on a Kyle DeMeo single.  In the second Rydzewski struck again as his bloop single to right scored Daddino and Harry Smith who were moving on the play.  DeMeo then singled home Rydzewski for the 4-0 lead.  Daddino's double in the fourth led to an RBI for Marino to get back the unearned run the Hawks surrendered in the third to make it 5-1 at that point which it remained.
From there it was all about Joba Daddino and two stellar defensive plays.  One by Ron Licciardi who robbed a Mepham player of Home Run in leftfield and one by Robbie Miotto who started a game ending 4-6-3 double play as DeMeo finished things off in the 7th.
And so, it comes down to who wants it more as game three comes to town.  Game time 4:30PM

Deja Vu?

For the second straight year the Seahawks opened with a Quarterfinals matchup vs Mepham at home, and for the second straight year the Hawks started with a clunker as they dropped this 2010 opener 8-4 to put themselves on the brink of playoff extinction.  The Hawks must now complete the task that they engineered in '09 when they returned fire by winning two straight games to advance.
This one was all about LOB's as the Hawks inability to get the clutch hit saw them leave ducks on the pond in every inning but one as they posted a poor 3 for 13 with men on base.  Coupled with three more defensive errors you have a pretty bad mix.  The normally steady top half of the lineup(1-5) struggled mightily as well going just 2 for 17 as the Hawks lineup mustered only seven hits four of which came from the bats of Nick Vilchez (2 singles) and Mike Marino (2 for 3, 3 RBI's).
Weather permitting, the Hawks head to Mepham on Tuesday in the time honored addage of one game at a time as they look to salvage the 2010 Season.

Seahawks Say Bye!

Leaving nothing to chance, the Seahawks completed their first goal of the year as they wrapped up third place in Conference AA-I by defeating Calhoun 6-3 in the regular season finale.  The win secured the Hawks home field advantage in the Quarterfinals as well as a Big Four Championship.
Jesse Montalto led the way as he neutralized the mighty bats of Calhoun by posting seven strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs in a complete game victory.
Battery mate Anthony Licata excelled in his first game as the cleanup hitter as he went 3 for 4 with a single, double and Home Run to pace the 10 hit attack.  Kyle DeMeo had two singles and two RBI's.  Tom "Target Practice" Rydzewski had a single and an RBI to go along with what seemed like his 30th Hit By Pitch of the season.  Ron Licciardi, Nick Vilchez, Anthony Zeppieri and Mike Marino all added singles to the stat sheet.
The Hawks now rest until Monday when they open up at Home at 4:30PM against a yet to be determined opponent.

Colts Deny Hawks

The Seahawks first attempt at clinching a playoff Bye fell short to the Calhoun Colts 11-9 as their rally from an 8-1 deficit was just a bit too much to overcome.  Early misplays and some powerful hitting by the potent Colts offense put the Hawks behind 4-0, 6-1 and 8-1 before the game turned for the better.  Anthony Zeppieri ignited the rally in the field first with yet another defensive gem before his first of two singles began a four run fourth inning.  Mike Marino, Ron Licciardi, Anthony Licata all had singles in the inning as did Al Gentile whose seeing-eye single with the bases loaded got the Hawks within three at 8-5.
The Hawks coughed one back before John Augello masterfully got out of a fifth inning jam to keep it at 9-5.  After another bottom of the order rally Kyle DeMeo got it to 9-8 with a three run blast in the fifth.
Unfortunately a dagger like two run Home Run in the sixth got it back to 11-8.  It would be just enough to keep the Hawks out of reach as they scratched one home in the sixth but then failed to get another clutch hit as they had second and third in the sixth and first and third in the seventh but were unable to deliver that final big hit.
Playoff wise, Mepham dropped out of the picture with their loss so now the Hawks will battle Baldwin and Massapequa for the final two Bye round spots.  A Hawks win will clinch without any help needed.

Seahawks Close In On Bye

John Daddino and Kyle DeMeo tag teamed the Bruin hitters while Tom Rydzewski's two run Home Run gave the offense the boost it needed as the Seahawks split the season series with Baldwin by posting a work-manlike 5-2 victory.
The win clinched at least a coin toss tie for third, fourth or fifth place in Conference AA-I as the Hawks continue to shoot for the important Big Four Champions Bye to the Quarterfinals as well as home field advantage in the playoffs.  A win over Calhoun in either of the next two games will secure a third place showing.  A loss in both of the games and multiple victories by Mepham, Baldwin and Massapequa might necessitate a tie-breaking procedure that would involve more math equations than three regents' exams combined.
As for the Baldwin finale the 90 minute affair lacked the usual flair of a Carey home game but the result was more than satisfying for the Hawks who besides Rydzewski's long ball, got offensive contributions from DeMeo, two hits and an RBI, Mike Marino, a single and a double, Al Gentile, a wind aided triple, and Daddino with a run scoring double.
On the hill, Daddino registered his second win of the season by going five strong allowing no earned runs on five strikeouts while DeMeo penciled in his first save of the season as he pitched two scoreless frames.
The Hawks close out their regular season home finale on Tuesday vs the Calhoun Colts at 4:30PM.

Bruins Maul Seahawks

Somebody put the bus in gear because the Hawks need to get out of Baldwin as soon as possible.  For the second straight year the Hawks had a chance to sew up a playoff spot vs the Bruins, and for the second straight year the Bruins sent the Seahawks crashing to the ground like a non-conforming sparrow!
Anthony Zeppieri's near double on the first pitch of the game that curved foul by a foot was the first of many bad omens as the Hawks surrendered eight runs on 11 hits while only managing four hits of their own.  To compound matters the Hawks whiffed a mind boggling eight times as the all or nothing offense flipped for the worse on this day.
With the AA-I race tightening up the Hawks return home for two in row starting Monday as they jockey for their final seed on the final week of the regular season.

Seahawks Sweep Cougars

One day after keeping the Seahawks within striking distance with his arm John Daddino repeated the feat by hitting a pinch hit Home Run in the fifth inning to help kickstart a three run rally that gave the Hawks the lead for good as they went on to defeat Bellmore JFK 8-4.
Jesse Montalto got his first win of the season with an assist from Ron Licciardi who got his first save of the season.  Montalto logged five innings with nine strikeouts and just four hits allowed while Licciardi contributed two scoreless frames and three whiffs.
With several regulars absent from the picture Tom Rydzewski and Nick Vilchez picked up the slack as they both had run scoring singles and two swipes apiece.  Pat Amato had a run scoring double that plated Licciardi in the second for the Hawks first run as Amato nearly obliterated the shortstop on a hustling slide.  And of course the pound for pound heavyweight champ for the Hawks Anthony Zeppieri laced a single and a double to go with two runs scored to highlight his best series of the year.  Mike Marino also had an RBI Sac Fly as only a highway robbery by the centerfielder kept Marino from going yard in the fourth.
The still third place Seahawks head to Baldwin on Thursday as they begin the last of their two series before the playoffs begin as the scramble for the Bye round moves along.

Hawks Win Pitchers Duel

In what might be described as one of the greatest high school pitching duels in Carey history John Daddino and Kevin Archbold of Bellmore as well as player of the game Ron Licciardi completed the following amazing accomplishments: 18 innings pitched, 6 hits allowed(Carey just 1), 3 runs-two of which came on wild pitches, 32 combined strikeouts and a Daddino no-decision on a seven inning no-hitter.
From the get-go it didn't appear as though the Hawks would have any trouble scoring as they loaded the bases in the first inning only to see just one run come across on a two out-two strike wild pitch to plate Kyle DeMeo with the first run.  After stranding runners in scoring position in the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 7th innings the Hawks finally got the winner in the 8th when Licciardi doubled with two outs before Anthony Zeppieri's gutsy at bat ended with an infield single that gave Licciardi a chance to risk a play at the plate as he raced past third.  For the fans that were there he should have been out easily but a swift sideways slide/dive resulted in a loose ball that allowed Licciardi the chance to grab the dish before the ball was found.  It proved to be the game winner as Licciardi then took care of business in the 8th albeit with his own drama as well as he stranded a Cougar baserunner at third by striking out the final two batters to get the win for the Hawks.
The extra inning affair was the third one in a week as the Seahawks continue to offer up free baseball as their pitching staff gets more quality time that will no doubt pay dividends come playoff time.  Certainly, a no-hitter that was perfect through five can only bolster the confidence of Hawks ace John Daddino who, if not by now, is as close as he has been to reaching 100% from his off-season shoulder surgery.
With so much free baseball the remaining aces will have their chance to improve their standing as well as the Hawks return to the diamond tomorrow to face Bellmore before wrapping up the week at Baldwin on Thursday.

A Dozen Does It!

After four and a half hours, 21 runs, 26 hits, seven pitchers used, four Home Runs, one fan ejection and a whole lot of "Did He Get 'Em?" controversy, the Seahawks finally ended the Mepham Marathon 11-10 with a walk off single in the bottom of the 12th inning to move back into sole possession of third place in Conference AA-I.
Anthony Licata was the hero for the second time in a week as his frozen rope to left field scored Mike Marino from second as he was moving on the pitch.  Just two batters before, Nick Vilchez, who was 3 for 4 with another towering Home Run, his second of the season, sacrificed Marino to second after his first pitch single began the winning sequence.
For the Hawks it was a crucial win as they now remain in good position for a top four spot which will provide a home playoff round and of course, a first round playoff bye.  The win though came a lot harder then they expected as they reliquinshed leads of 4-0, 7-3 and 10-6 before finally putting the brakes on the potent Pirates offense.
Early on it was John Augello and Jesse Montalto who tried doggedly to slow down the Pirates but eventually it came down to Hawks relief ace Kyle DeMeo who finally figured things out as he pitched four and two thirds of hitless ball including getting out of a second and third with one out jam in the eighth which was Mepham's last real shot.  DeMeo posted an impressive seven strikeouts as he got his second win of the week.
Other notable big plays were turned in by both Marino brothers who each had running catches in the outfield to help keep the Pirates at bay.  DeMeo also had a three run Home Run.  Tom Rydzewski had two singles.  Al Gentile scored on a face plant slide from second on a grounder to shortstop after the ball trickled away from the first baseman to highlight a three run fourth inning.  Anthony Zeppieri played his usual silky smooth in right field but unfortunately keeps hitting rockets right at people.  And Pat Amato in a pinch hitting situation again reached base to improve his sterling on base percentage.
The tired Hawks get just one day off before heading over to Bellmore JFK on Monday as just three series' remain before the real season begins.

A Walpole Classic!

"Perseverance" Paul Collazo made the Bob Walpole Classic IX at St. John's University one for the ages as Collazo came within two outs of a perfect game in his first High School pitching appearance ever.  Despite losing the near gem Collazo still rung in with a dazzling two hit, 16 strikeout performance as the Hawks dropped district rival Elmont 14-1 to remain unbeaten in all nine Walpole Classics.
Collazo also led the 16 hit offensive attack as he posted two singles and a double.  Rob Miotto also had three hits on two doubles, a single and three RBI's.  John Daddino tripled and singled to go with a walk and a Hit by Pitch.  Ron Licciardi had two singles.  John Augello one hopped the wall in left for a triple.  Pat Amato had a single.  Jack Young delivered his first of the season in a seven run third inning, while Al Gentile, Mike Marino (a two run triple) and Kyle Demeo all had pinch hits in the sixth.
Paul Collazo was named the game's MVP.  Congratulations!  The Hawks return to league play on Saturday at 2:30PM as they conclude their Mepham series as they play their fourth game in four days.

Hawks Streak Ends at Three
The Hawks modest three game winning streak came to a screeching halt after a sloppy five error affair at the Mepham Launching Pad proved too much to overcome as they fell to the Pirates 9-7.
Ron Licciardi went six innings on the mound allowing nine hits, nine runs, only two of which were earned, while striking out five.
Rob Miotto coming off the bench was sharp going 2 for 3 while reaching base safely all three times he was up.  Nick Vilchez crushed a three run Home Run to give the Hawks their only lead of the game 4-3 in the third inning.  Anthony Licata picked up two more hits which were both doubles, and John Daddino pinch hit a single in the sixth to keep his average on the rise.
Unfortunately, the seven runs would not be enough as several crucial two out errors led to two different Mepham rallies that the Hawks regrettably could not match.
The fourth place Hawks head to St. John's University tomorrow for their only Non-League game of the year against Elmont before returning home Saturday for a rare weekend afternoon game (2:30PM).

Seahawks Squeeze Past Jets

Anthony Licata's perfect squeeze bunt in the top of the 9th plated Mike Marino to give the Hawks a 6-5 lead that Kyle Demeo protected by throwing a scoreless final frame to give the Hawks their third straight win and a sweep of the season series with East Meadow.
In a sloppy affair the Hawks coughed up leads of 4-0 and 5-4 but when push came to shove the pitching and defense buckled down preserving the hard fought win.
One week removed from his mastery of East Meadow on MSG John Daddino struggled with a tired arm and only lasted four innings giving up just two hits but walking an uncharacteristic six batters.  Fortunately his bat was not affected as he went a solid 1 for 2 with a double off the wall and a sac fly to right for three RBI's.
Nick Vilchez had a good day with the stick as he went 3 for 4 with an RBI triple and single that moved Mike Marino into scoring position for Licata's squeeze bunt.  Marino also doubled as he posted a 2 for 5 day.
In the field the Hawks put together their first errorless game of the year as they were led by Licata in the field as well as he made a smooth over the shoulder catch down the left field foul line in the fifth and a great snag of a one hop bullet in the seventh to keep the Jets grounded.
Demeo's win did however come with some nail-biting as he entered Sandman style in the eighth and the bases loaded.  He got to 3-0 before coming back on three straight pitches for the K before the Hawks scored the go ahead run in the top of the ninth.
It was the kind of win that the Hawks will gladly take as a few fundamental hiccups did not cause them to blow off course.  The fine tuning will continue tomorrow at the Mepham Homer Dome as the bats will surely awaken at that launching pad.  Game time is 4:45PM.

Hawks Soar in TV Debut

Not since last year's playoff game during the Relay for Life Event was there as much excitement as there was today in Seahawk country as Carey played host to its first ever MSG Varsity game.  And for the Hawks they couldn't have scripted it any better as they cruised to a 9-1 win behind the solid pitching of John Daddino and Jesse Montalto.  Daddino went five allowing just a 'Carey' double over the outstretched arm of Anthony Zeppieri in right field while striking out eight in just five innings as he almost hit his prescribed pitch count number exceeding it by just one.  Montalto was also strong going two solid innings with three K's.
Further enhancing the quality day was the fact that every non-injured Seahawk got into the game allowing each of the "Jersey Shore" Wannabees to get some quality face time!  :)
Offensively, Kyle DeMeo logged in for three doubles while knocking in two runs.  Mike Marino added 3 RBI's on a Sac Fly, a bases loaded walk and on a base hit to left.  Tom Rydzewski, Anthony Licata and John Daddino all chipped in with singles during the Hawks seven run third inning outburst.  And if the price is right John "Mr. Newsday" Augello might be able to convince the scorekeeper that his routine ball to short was actually a base hit.  Keep Dreaming All-American Burger Boy!!!!
The 5-4 Hawks complete their East Meadow series on Monday away as the Jets will no doubt look to even up the series after their poor showing today.  For the Hawks it's all about getting better and winning at minimum two out of three every week.

Johnny Jokes!

In one of the most impressive pitching performances in recent memory, John Augello in just his second career start, mowed down the first place Generals of MacArthur 9-1 to help even the Seahawks record at 4-4 as the highs and lows of the ultra competitive AA-I Ability Group continue.
One day removed from a tough home loss the Hawks headed to MacArthur in search of a pick me up.  What they got was a hard working Senior who never complains and is all about the team to deliver a gem as Augello went the full seven innings, striking out seven, walking just two and allowing just three third inning base hits to garner his first Varsity win.
In the field, the Hawks were also nearly flawless as they committed just one error early before putting together their most sound defensive effort of the season.
At the plate Nick Vilchez had a single and a monstrous double that the wind knocked down preventing it from being a Home Run.  Al Gentile also had one of each to go with two RBI's.  And lastly the Hawks swiped four bases as they finally mixed agressive and smart baserunning together.
The Hawks rest on Wednesday before returning home for an exciting MSG Varsity game vs East Meadow at 4:30PM Thursday.
Generals Edge Hawks

Struggles with the glove and failure in the clutch again reared its ugly head as a valiant comeback by the Seahawks was wasted in a disappointing 6-5 loss to the first place MacArthur Generals.
The Hawks dug themselves an early 5-1 deficit as two errors, a walk and an HBP gave the Generals just enough to work with to jump out by four after two innings.
Once Ron Licciardi, who scuffled all game long, found his groove he was able to grind out five innings long enough to strike out 10 but more importantly keep it close enough for the Hawks to make a run.  That run came in the third inning when Anthony Licata deposited a full count bases loaded pitch that plated Tom Rydzewski, Al Gentile and Nick Vilchez who all walked as their patience at the plate paid off.  Unfortunately the clutch Home Run was the only prime time shot delivered as the Hawks went hitless the final four innings stranding seven basemen including second and third in the sixth when a single could have put the Hawks ahead for the first time.  Throw in 10 more strikeouts and they just didn't give themselves a chance to pull it out.
Compounding matters was the pourous defense as the Hawks committed four or more errors for the third time this season.  A difficult obstacle to overcome no matter how much they battle.  Just like with batting slumps the Hawks will have to work their way out of their fielding malaise or they will continue to flounder in the middle of the AA-I pack.  They get that opportunity tomorrow Tuesday April 20th 4:45pm at MacArthur.
Seahawks Scalp Chiefs

Using the same sixth inning rally Massapequa used the day before, the Hawks were able to even their league record at 3-3 after a thrilling 6-2 win over the Chiefs in the series finale.
Tom Rydzewski singled home Anthony Zeppieri, who had re-entered for Pat Amato, who walked to lead off the sixth inning just like the Chiefs did the day before.  And much like the day before three runs scored on a big play to put the game away but this time it was Al Gentile's turn to bring home the runs as he went yard over the left field fence for the eventual final margin of 6-2. The three run Home Run capped a great 24 hours for Gentile who found a home for his sweet swing next season as he committed to Queens College just the night before.  Congratulations!
Kyle DeMeo who had his own exciting day to say the least for different reasons got the win by pitching two innings, striking out six out of six while yielding just one unearned run.  He also made the pivotal defensive play of the game when he started a rally killing double play 6-4-3 turn in the fifth inning when the Chiefs pressured starting pitcher John Daddino.
Daddino, on the road to recovery, was solid again throwing 64 pitches, striking out seven while allowing just two hits and one earned run as he slowly heads back to 100%.
Hard as it was, DeMeo's infield spark ran a distant second however to what might have been the play of the year when Outfielder Mike Marino leaped and grinded the Centerfield wall Tony Hawk style on his way to a Home Run saving catch that kept the early momentum in the Hawks favor.
Kudos also go out to Zeppieri, with two strikes on him, and Joe Marino for staking the Hawks to a 2-0 fourth inning lead as they both successfully put down suicide squeeze bunts that turned into base hits,
Those plays coupled with the clutch hitting and excellent pitching was just the right tonic for the Hawks who now await the arrival of the first place MacArthur Generals come Monday at 4:45PM at Carey.

Five Run Sixth Halts Hawks

A good old fashioned pitcher's duel turned ugly fast when some sixth inning defensive miscues by the Hawks defense allowed the Massapequa Chiefs to claim game one of the series after grabbing a 6-1 lead and eventually winning 6-3.
Jesse Montalto was sharp in this marquee matchup as he went punch for punch with Chiefs ace Joe Lipari allowing just two earned runs while striking out six and walking only one.  Unfortunately, the one walk in the sixth eventually started the string of bad luck for the Hawks who then watched as a sacrifice became a single, a double play ball became a four base error with three different Hawks booting the ball on the same play.  And another insurance run also scored unearned to further complicate the Hawks plight as the inning was textbook Chiefs baseball who, when given the chance pounce on any opportunities presented.
Offensively, wasted chances kept the Hawks from jumping out to several multiple run leads as they stranded seven runners, unsuccessfully sacrifice bunted three times, were picked off and left men on second and third two times.
Despite their inability to get the clutch hit it was still there for the taking in the sixth but on this day it wasn't to be.
After out-hitting the Chiefs and scoring two runs in the seventh, the Hawks will play off those positives as they rest for a day before returning home on Thursday to complete the Massapequa set.  Game time is 4:30PM

Hawks Drop Anchor 10-3

Mike Marino, a single, double and a triple with three RBI's, Al Gentile, two doubles and two RBI's, Kyle DeMeo, three singles and two RBI's, Anthony Zeppieri, three singles and Anthony Licata, two singles and two RBI's spearheaded a 14 hit attack as the Seahawks evened their record at 2-2 after sweeping the Oceanside Sailors 10-3 in the series finale.
Ron Licciardi won his second game of the season, both against Oceanside by going the distance and striking out eight in the process for the Hawks who have now moved their way back up to the middle of the AA-I pack as the dogfight continues.
The Hawks roll into Massapequa on Tuesday as they open their two game set at 4:45PM.  Sorry but no truth to the rumor though that John Augello will be waiting with All-American Burgers for everyone!!!!

Seahawks Sink Sailors

Ron Licciardi's bases loaded walk-off ground rule double over the famous Carey HS Double fence gave the Seahawks an exciting 7-5 win over the Oceanside Sailors in the first of their two game set.  Licciardi's four pitch strikeout in the top half of the seventh also gained him his first Varsity win as he came in to relieve Kyle DeMeo with the go ahead runner on second base.
Demeo was also impressive on the hill as he posted 4 2/3 innings allowing just two runs with seven strikeouts to keep the Hawks close after they fell behind 4-2 in the third.
Al Gentile continued his smoking hot ways with the hammer as he notched three more hits including a mammoth Home Run to center as he is now 7 for his last 7.  DeMeo was also 2 for 3 with the stick as was Tom Rydzewski.  Anthony Licata, making his debut behind the plate, and Joe Marino each notched their first hits of the season.
Defensively, after a little sloppiness early, the Hawks tightened the reins as Jesse Montalto, at 3B, and Gentile, at 1B turned in the play of the game on a ball in the hole and on a solid tag at first to negate a run and keep the Hawks down by just one run in the sixth.
With the win the Hawks now have the small monkey off their back as a grind 'em out win can only build their confidence as the monster AA-I schedule continues with successive road games at Oceanside and Massapequa starting Monday.

Sloppy Hawks Swept

Just like a Mens softball league the Hawks series finale with Freeport had all the ingredients of a lazy July Sunday afternoon: 80+ degree temperature, lots of Home Runs, lots of errors, lots of suspect baserunning, and of course a game that wasn't decided until the final out was clearly made.
Unfortunately for the Seahawks their 16-12 loss wasn't part of the Summer fun as they now reside in the AA-II basement after stumbling out of the starting gate against the very gritty upstart Red Devils who brought no fear to table as they clearly showed that they belong with the big boys.
Of course when you make six errors and walk 10 batters most teams will look even better.  Defensively, it didn't happen for the Hawks who, just one day after a solid showing, didn't make the plays they needed to.  Four pitchers who gained valuable experience pitching quickly realized that Everyone hits a fastball in AA-II so developing the off-speed part of the pitching package will be crucial as the season continues.
Offensively, the Hawks should win when they score 12 runs but even that had an asterisk as only six of the 12 were knocked in as past balls and Freeport's own poor play made the output a little deceiving.  Certainly though there were positives to build off as the Hawks never quit as they rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it interesting.  Also Kyle DeMeo and Tom Rydzewski each hit Home Runs, Al Gentile went a perfect 4 for 4, and John Daddino chipped in with two singles.
These positives will be built upon as the Hawks host 2-0 Oceanside on Friday.

Hawks Drop Opener 5-4

After four weeks of pre-season action the Hawks finally broke the seal on the 2010 campaign, unfortunately they were unable to hold an early 3-0 lead as they fell in the opener to the Freeport Red Devils 5-4.
Despite striking out eight and going the distance Ron Licciardi took the loss as a tough second inning sapped most of the first inning momentum that eventually led to some small ball that for a change didn't go the Hawks way.
Nick Vilchez paced the Hawks offensive attack as he went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI's.  Kyle DeMeo, Tom Rydzewski, Licciardi and pinch-hitter Pat Amato added the other four hits as a somewhat stagnant attack only mustered three hits after the first inning while striking out looking a disappointing six times.
The Hawks head home on Wednesday for their Home opener. Game time is 4:30PM.
