May 11th

Hawks Fall In Finale

First and third, down by two runs, and Pablo Capellan drives one to right center as the potential tying runs look to score. In any other season the ball would have found a gap and the Hawks would bring home a victory. Instead the ball nestled neatly into the glove of the Calhoun rightfielder and the 2005 Seahawks were beaten again 4-2.

The excitement, followed by the disappointment in that final play was the ultimate microcosm for a Carey Seahawks Baseball team that just never caught a break. Good hitting, good fielding, good pitching and clutch plays simply never had an opportunity to meet as the 2005 Seahawks always seemed to be one ingredient short.

The finale saw a great pitching performance as T.J. Humrich (4 K's, 4 hits, 4 runs) went the distance only to take another hard luck loss. Vinny Gentile launched a solo rocket in the third only to see it not be enough as the Hawks only registered six hits. The fielding came through with their second errorless game in a week only to see runners score on bloops and seeing eye base hits.

Basically, nice guys do indeed finish last as a wonderful group of young men just didn't have winning written in the stars for them. So with the loss, the 2005 Seahawks finish 6-14-1 in 5th place. On the positive side of things, they will remember a stirring victory over Calhoun. They will remember taking two out of three from Bellmore, and they will remember the recognition of being named a Scholar-Athlete Team. Not bad, not bad at all!

May 10th

Calhoun Crashes Senior Day

On the day that saw Jon Leidner, Pablo Capellan, Dan Cozzolino, Justin Schomaker, Mike Kempel, Anthony Kowalsky, and Dan Heuser-Bastian take the home field for the final time as Carey Seahawks, Calhoun decided to ruin their party.

For five innings the Hawks were fired up and looking for a second consecutive upset of the second place Colts. The Seahawks staked themselves to an 8-1 lead through two innings after two hits apiece by Dan Heuser-Bastian and Jon Leidner, after Justin Schomaker's first career hit, after Dan Cozzolino and Pablo Capellan hit ropes up the middle, and after Mike Kempel was cruising on the mound. The script was looking real good for many of the senior's career home finale.

Unfortunately just like with most of the luck we've had all year things suddenly turned sour. The seven run lead was whittled down to three as Kempel entered the sixth with close to 90 pitches under his belt. The pitches that were hitting corners early now started to get put in play. To the Hawks dismay it seemed like everyone of those balls put in play were loaded with grease as the defense that had been so great the day before crashed and burned. Forty five minutes, 7 errors and two pitchers later the Hawks had been blindsided by a 12 run inning that essentially washed away Senior Day as the Hawks took another painful loss, 16-8.

Disappointing as the result was it doesn't change the fact that Seahawk Seniors will be sorely missed as they have earned the respect of the Coaches and underclassmen alike. Best of Luck to all them in their final game tomorrow as the Hawks close out 2005 with the rubber match against Calhoun.

May 9th

Seahawks Stun Colts

After having their heads handed to them in a 20-1 loss in the final game of the Mepham series, the coaching staff issued an edict about character and how to play with pride despite being eliminated from playoff contention. Since then the Seahawks have shown more than just character. They have reeled off three straight victories and shown that they are winners and will not accept mediocrity in any form. That couldn't have been more evident then in their stunning 3-1 win over AA powerhouse Calhoun who are only three years removed from a State Championship.

Adam "It's all about the Offense...and the Pitching Too!" Kirell was brilliant as he pitched a complete game, 5 hit, 5 strikeout, 2 BB, gem as he outdueled Calhoun's ace, Englebert Von Weidlein. Kirell's hot ways at the plate also continued as he went 2 for 2 scoring the winning run in the 4th inning.

Special recognition should also go out to the Hawks infield as Mike Kempel at 3B, Frank Intagliata at SS, T.J. Humrich at 2B and Pablo Capellan at 1B were flawless in the field. Rounding out the defense was Dan Cozzolino who made a diving catch in Leftfield to end the game.

Offensively, John Chilelli went 2 for 3, Cozzolino was 1 for 3 with a Sac Fly and T.J. Humrich had a run scoring groundout in the first.

Last but not least, the Coaching Staff is honored to announce that the 2005 Seahawks have just been named a Scholar-Athlete Team which means that nearly 70% of their roster has maintained a school average of 90. Congratulations for being winners on and off the field!!!

May 6th

HFC Wins BWC III

The Carey Seahawks were finally able to enjoy a laugher as they celebrated with an 11-3 win over Sewanhaka in the 3rd Annual Bob Walpole Classic. After throwing a strike in the ceremonial first pitch, Coach Walpole was treated to plenty more strikes as T.J. Humrich (2005 Bob Walpole Classic Most Valuable Player) whiffed 8 batters while allowing 0 runs and only 2 hits in five innings of work.

Humrich was also 1 for 4 with 2 RBI at the plate. His team leading 8th double also grants him admission into the Carey All-Time Single Season Top Ten for Doubles. With three games left, both he and Danny Cozzolino have their eyes on the number one spot which still stands at 10 set by Terry Huang in 2001, Steve Tursellino in 1986 and Jim Scully in 1985.

John Chilelli also had a big day with the stick as he went 2 for 4 with a monster Home Run and 3 RBI. Vinny Gentile and Frank Intagliata chipped in with two hits and two RBI's apiece while Pablo Capellan and Adam "It's still all about the Offense" Kirell each singled and knocked in a run of their own to lead the Hawks attack.

Defensively, C.J. Zahradka pitched two solid innings not allowing an earned run. Christian "The Comedian" Petersen made a great play at the hot corner that was gobbled up by a full splitting Joe Bearese at first. And lastly, Anthony Gregorio ended the game with a brilliant heads up shot from Rightfield for an extemely rare 9-3 putout.

In closing, a huge thanks goes out to Coach Walpole. It's always nice to see Coach support the current Seahawks. More significantly however is the fact that the 2005 Seahawks are now still undefeated any time Coach W. attends a game.

Sorry Seahawks fans but there is no truth to the rumor that the Hawks have purchased a limo for the upcoming Calhoun road games.

May 3rd

Seahawks Sweep Spartans

Adam "It's all about the Offense" Kirell's fourth inning Home Run held up as the game winning run as the Seahawks swept the two game season series from district foe Elmont. Kirell's career day at the plate saw him go 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's, a double and a single as well as his line drive cannon Home Run.

Also contributing with the stick was Pablo Capellan who hit his second Home Run in as many games. Again it was a moonshot that had the fans stirring. John " 2 Strikes" Chilelli, Dan "7 Doubles" Cozzolino, Vinny "The Comedian" Gentile, and Anthony "What's the Bunt Sign Again?" Kowalsky all pitched in on the offensive side.

Mike Kempel held up his end of the bargain on the defensive side as his season long hard work was finally rewarded as he got his first win of the year. For the third time in four outings Kempel went the distance. He struck out a career high 11 batters. He allowed only one earned run while scattering five hits.

The Seahawks next play on Friday May 6th in the Annual Bob Walpole Classic when they host the Sewanhaka Indians.

April 29th

Pirates Pillage Seahawks

Rock Bottom! The Seahawks were manhandled 20-1 in their series finale with Mepham. No words can describe the disappointment both the Coaches and Players are feeling right about now. Everyone will regroup and prepare for the Non League schedule before wrapping up the year with first place Calhoun. Perhaps the Hawks can do a little standings spoiling in that series. Kudos to Pablo Capellan who hit an absolute bomb in today's losing effort.

April 28th

Pirates Seal Seahawks Fate

After treading water for nearly two weeks, the Seahawks inevitable demise finally came to pass in an 11-8 loss to the Mepham Pirates. The loss ensures a second consecutive season without a playoff appearance.

The only solace in this particular loss was the fact that the Hawks broke out of their season long two out slump by posting 7 runs in the second inning while two men were gone. At the time the 7 runs were good enough for a 7-3 lead that had the Seahawks earmarked for a rout in their favor.

In the breakout inning Dan Cozzolino led the way with two fence clearing doubles which now puts him in reach of the prestigious All-Time Top Ten Doubles list for Carey High School. Cozzolino's hot bat was followed up in the inning by Pablo Capellan, Dustin Capriglione, Vinny Gentile, Mike Kempel, Frank Intagliata and Joe Bearese who all had big hits to give the Hawks one of their most explosive innings in recent memory.

Sadly, the 7-3 lead didn't hold up as Pirates' hitters slowly chipped away at starting pitcher T.J. Humrich who finally gave way to C.J. Zahradka in the sixth. As the saying goes, "give credit where credit is due" that credit had to go to the Pirates who simply outhit the Hawks. There is no fault or blame rather a simple tip of the cap when one team just plays better on a particular day. For the unlucky Hawks, those days have come far too often this season.

The Seahawks close out the three game set Friday morning as they try to salvage the finale.

April 26th

Mepham Edges Seahawks 6-4

Sometimes you just can't get over that hump. Fast Forward to the opener in an important AA-IV series that was as well played a High School game as you are going to see.

Unfortunately for the Carey Seahawks they were one or two base hits short as another day with too many men (8) left on base came back to haunt them in a stinging 6-4 loss.

Mike Kempel went the distance, scattering 7 hits including three backbreaking slow rollers that found soft spots in the infield. A seeing eye single and a bad hop basehit also added to the bad karma. Those hits gave Mepham a 5-1 lead that was simply too much to overcome despite a 2-run double by T.J. Humrich and a run scoring single by Pablo Capellan that gave the Hawks hope at 5-4.

With the top of 6th finished and the Hawks leadoff hitters coming up in the bottom half of the inning the Hawks felt that a comeback was possible. Three batters later and three feet later the Hawks found bad luck on their side again as John Chilelli's liner was snagged by a leaping second baseman, T.J. Humrich's gapper was grabbed at the shoestring and Frank Intagliata's roller up the middle found him out by a step.

In a nutshell, the half-inning epitomized the 2005 campaign as the Seahawks are always just a step or a play from turning the corner on what has become a promising but frustrating season so far.

April 22nd

Knights Conquer Seahawks

The Floral Park Knights defeated the Carey Seahawks 12-0 in a Friday Non-League affair.

April 21st

Hedless Hawks Hammer Cougars 14-7

Wake a sleeping giant and you will feel his wrath. Wake a sleeping Seahawk and what you get is a 19 hit attack that had guys running to the bat rack. Eight of the nine starters registered hits, including three who had three hits each.

John Chilelli (2B, 2 RBI), T.J. Humrich (2B, 3 RBI) and Dan Cozzolino, who finished a triple shy of the cycle as he mashed his 2nd Home Run of the year to go with 2 RBI's, led the top half of the order. The bottom side of the order was ably represented by Vinny "UP!!!!" Gentile who launched a 2 Run Bomb as well as an RBI single in his first League start of the year. Mike Kempel, Dustin Capriglione and Pablo "The Quiet Respected Leader" Capellan all added two hits apiece.

For the second time in the series a Seahawks pitcher earned his first career Varsity Win. This time Christian Petersen came off the bench to do the honors. Peterson pitched 4 innings, allowing only 1 run with 4 strikeouts. Starter Adam Kirell pitched well but found himself at 96 on the count meter after being forced to do some overtime while the Seahawks defense found itself.

The win gives the Seahawks their first series win of the year as they continue to scratch and claw in the highly competitive AA-IV Conference. The Hawks move to the vacation week with a huge three game set against the Mepham Pirates who currently hold the final playoff spot.

April 19th

Cougars Wrap Around Seahawks 12-4

After an ugly loss to a Cougars club that found no friends on the Seahawks bench, the Carey 2005 squad finds itself in dire straits. Realistically, the Hawks will have to run the table 8-0 if they have any playoff aspirations. The exciting 7-5 win just a day before, which should have brought a sense of confidence, instead provided no lift at all as the Seahawks found difficulties in the field and at the plate.

T.J. Humrich took the loss, Dustin Capriglione's triple was the only big shot of the day and Coach Hedquist was issued a one way ticket out of town. All in all, the extracurricular activity in the game should at least provide the struggling Hawks with a little bit of motivation.

April 18th

Seahawks Clip Cougars

The Seahawks earned their first Conference AA-IV victory of the year and in the process ended their three game losing streak with an exciting 7-5 win over the Bellmore JFK Cougars.

Pinch Hitter Joe Bearese plated two with a 6th inning triple that held up as the game winner for C.J. Zahradka who earned his first Varsity win. Zahradka pitched two scoreless innings ( 3K's) in relief of Mike Kempel who pitched another gem by going five innings and allowing only three earned runs.

Offensively, T.J Humrich doubled twice and scored twice, John Chilelli tripled and scored, Pablo Capellan singled and knocked in one, and Frank Intagliata scored and stole a base to pace the Seahawks offensive attack.

The Hawks travel to Bellmore on Tuesday April 19th for the second game of the three game series.

April 14th

Generals Sweep Seahawks

Moral victories are always nice when your team doesn't have the skill or talent to compete. The 2005 Seahawks are NOT one of those teams as they have more than enough talent and skill to compete with anyone. They proved that again when they went toe to toe with one of the premier baseball schools in Nassau County for the third consecutive game. The disappointment in the 3-2 loss comes from the fact that sometimes talent and "finding a way to get it done" don't always join together.

Adam Kirell gritted out another sparkling pitching performance as he went the distance without allowing a single earned run. MacArthur took advantage of several Seahawk fielding mishaps and put up just enough runs to keep themselves in the win column. That miniscule difference, like when you get a seeing eye single with two men on, is what it means to "find a way to get it done." Eventually, the Seahawks will get their own mojo working but for now they'll have to keep plugging away in order to get the ship righted.

Offensively, an array of off-speed pitches and curves limited the Hawks to just six hits. Dan Cozzolino continued his hard hitting ways as he smashed a single in the first to score Joe Bearese who singled earlier in the inning as the Seahawks took a 1-0 lead for the second straight game.

T.J. Humrich broke out of his own mini slump by going 2 for 4 with a game tying triple that plated Joe Marciano who just collected his first Varsity hit a pitch before.

However, his occupancy at third was without a doubt the finest example of missing out on a golden opportunity as three consecutive Hawks hitters couldn't get Humrich home.

One inning later the Hawks threatened again as a walk to Dustin Capriglione was followed by an Anthony Kowalsky bunt single to set up first and second with no one out. That was followed by a strikeout and a devastating double play ball that was ripped right at the Generals SS for the 5-4-3 backbreaker.

The hard working Hawks will get back on their horse and rudely welcome Bellmore JFK next Monday at home as they make a last ditch effort to get back in the playoff chase.

April 12th

MacArthur Trips Up Seahawks Again

Despite out hitting the Generals 10 to 6, the Seahawks once again found themselves on the short end of the stick in a 5-3 loss to MacArthur.

For the second straight game the Seahawks wasted a great pitching performance. This time the hard luck loser was T.J. Humrich who went the distance and struck out 10 batters for a career high. With the exception of two separate two out rallies, one of which was aided by a horrendous no call on a Generals steal attempt, Humrich only gave up four hard hit balls.

Unfortunately, those hits came at the opportune times while the Hawks hits, as always, seem to spread themselves out.

Those hits came from John Chilelli who again led the Seahawks offense as he finished a Home Run shy of the cycle. Frank Intagliata notched his third multiple hit game. Dan Cozzolino and Dustin Capriglione each added a ground rule double and Joe Bearese contributed a single.

Basically, the Seahawks are right there. They are scratching the surface as far as breaking out but the lack of that big inning and clutch hit has made them unable to get in the winners circle against the really tough AA teams. Hopefully with 10 league games left in the regular season the Hawks will put together a winning streak and get back in the playoff chase before too long.

April 11th

Generals Outduel Seahawks 3-0

After a week of duking it out in Conference AA-1, the Seahawks finally returned to League play with a road opener at the MacArthur Generals. Unfortunately for them, the Seahawks were welcomed with the daunting task of taking on MacArthur's Joe Cullen, who currently stands as the number one ranked pitcher in NY State with a 90+MPH fastball and a knee-buckling curve.

However, to the Hawks credit there was no backing down and after three innings they found themselves locked in a pictchers duel as Mike Kempel (6 Innings, 3 K's, 3 Walks, 3 earned Runs) was equal to the challenge.

Despite swinging the bat aggressively the Hawks wasted their only real good opportunity in the second when Dustin Capriglione was caught stealing right before Dan Cozzolino's monster triple to the rightfield gap. From there on out it was good hacks but poor results.

Certainly, a type of situation where all you can do is just tip your cap. The Generals finally broke through with some "small ball" runs but they too had to acknowledge Carey's determination. A positive that the Seahawks will build upon in tomorrow's home contest in the second of three.

April 7th

Seahawks Slay Spartans

After struggling to get any kind of offense going the past three games, the Seahawks exploded for 16 hits in a thrilling 11-10 come from behind win over the Elmont Spartans.

T.J. Humrich's two-run Home Run in the top of the 7th gave the Hawks an 11-10 lead that Adam Kirell, after a brief scare in the bottom of the 7th, converted into his first career varsity win. Kirell's three innings of work followed a strong start by Jon Brosnan who went four innings, struck out seven and allowed only two earned runs. Together, Hawks pitching was responsible for only three earned runs overall as the Hawks defense committed an unacceptable 6 errors.

Fortunately the bats were alive as six different Hawks had multiple hits. Dan Cozzolino was 3 for 4 with an opposite field Home Run, a double and 2 RBI's. John Chilelli also did a little yardwork as he Homered, doubled and knocked in two runs. Dustin Capriglione smashed the rightfield fence twice for two doubles. Frank Intagliata stole two bases, and narrowly misssed a Home Run as his opposite field blast missed going out by less than five feet. Pablo Capellan also contributed to the vandalism as his first inning double smashed the same unlucky rightfield fence that had the game looking more like Arena Baseball.

All in all it was a great character win that will hopefully jump start the season as the Seahawks head to league play this Monday as they meet the MacArthur Generals.

April 6th

Massapequa Too Much For Seahawks

The Seahawks scratched and clawed for over 5 and half innings against the Masspequa Chiefs before self destructing in the 6th as they fell 13-2 in the final game of the AA crossovers.

Freshman call up Sal Intagliata ripped a single and a triple to pace the offense while T.J. Humrich battled for four innings on the mound to keep things close. Intagliata's triple was nearly a Home Run as he was thrown out at the plate on a very controversial call. Intagliata also sparkled in the field as he dove to snag a sure double from a Chiefs hitter. The Seahawks head to Elmont tomorrow in a Non League affair as they continue to look for answers to their early season woes.

April 5th

Seahawks Kiss Sister in 8-8 Tie

The stumbling Seahawks let the Uniondale Knights hang around and it cost them dearly. The shortened affair left the Seahawks with taste of a loss after numerous blown chances and continued poor play in the field resulted in an 8-8 tie that will, in all likelihood, not be completed.

Mike Kempel went four innings and allowed 4 runs ,of which only 2 were earned. C.J. Zahradka finished the last 3 innings giving up four runs of his own.

At the plate the Seahawks mind boggling futility continued as the Hawks offense seems to make every pitcher they face look like Roger Clemens. After their two hits against Oceanside the Seahawks merely doubled that total to four. Two of those were pinch hit doubles. Dustin Capriglione ripped a shot over the rightfield fence and later came around to score to tie it the first time. And in the bottom of the 7th, Joe Bearese smashed a double off the centerfield fence that missed being a walk off home run by four feet. The double eventually scored T.J. Humrich but the 7th inning rally fell short just before darkness fell.

Unfortunately, falling short has been an all too common theme so far.

April 4th

Sailors Set Seahawks Adrift 13-1

Meeting the Oceanside Sailors for the first time was another debut the Seahawks could do without as they were pounded 13-1. Adam Kirell suffered the loss as bad pitch counts, coupled with some suspect fielding led to a disappointing first Varsity start for Kirell. The lone highlight was Frank Intagliata's RBI single in the 4th inning. Intagliata finished 2 for 2 as he was the only one able to figure out the Sailors starting pitcher. The 1-2 Seahawks now return home for a matchup with the Uniondale Knights in the second of four consecutive games.

March 31st

Seahawks Spook Red Devils 10-3

What a difference a day makes. As anticipated, the Seahawks rebounded nicely from their opening day jitters by routing the Freeport Red Devils 10-3 in the second game of the AA Crossovers. The Hawks offense pounded out 13 hits. Jon Leidner went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI and 2 Stolen Bases. John Chilelli was 2 for 3 with 3 Swipes. Dan Cozzolino went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, and Mike Kempel also went 2 for 3 to pace the hit parade. The high flying Hawks totaled 9 Stolen Bases on the day as every single essentially stretched itself into a double.

On the hill, T.J. Humrich recorded the 'W' by going 5 innings with 3 strikeouts and only 1 earned run allowed. Humrich was also 2 for 3 at the plate. Although not a save situation, C.J. Zahradka pitched a solid 1-2-3 6th inning in his first career appearance on the mound.

March 30th

Braves Scalp Seahawks 12-4

Baseball can, at times, be a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, and you hit the ball. However, when you can't do that, Baseball can be an agonizing sport. Such was the case in an extremely disappointing opening day for the Carey Seahawks. The Hawks first venture in the world of AA resulted in 3 measly hits, 4 errors, 8 earned runs allowed and a rather unexpected sense of urgency. Granted, the beauty of Baseball is that you play so many games that bouncing back with a good performance can quickly erase a poor effort. That will be certainly be the goal Thursday March 31st when the Seahawks host another newcomer, the Freeport Red Devils. Game time is 4:15PM

March 26th

LaSalle knocks off Seahawks 13-11 Softball Style

Despite getting only 4 hits the Seahawks stayed neck and neck with the Cardinals of LaSalle for seven full innings. The Seahawks pitching held up quite admirably as Justin "Sewer Cap" Schomaker, Mike "The Wrestler" Kempel, Adam "Dirt-Toe" Kirell, T.J. "The Rookie" Humrich and C.J. "The Rock" Zahradka all pitched marvelously to leave Coach LaMarca with some very tough, but exciting choices as the regular season begins in just two days. Hopefully, the Hawks hitting will come around as the expected short inning games will make runs a premium. Game time Monday is 4PM as the Seahawks welcome the Syosset Braves.

March 22nd

Wantagh Whips Seahawks 10-3 in Final Exhibition Game

Just like with any other sport, momentum in baseball can make or break you. Fast forward to the third inning, the Seahawks were sitting pretty with the bases loaded. They had Frank Intagliata and his hot stick at the plate with a chance to blow things wide open. Suddenly a scorcher to gap looked to plate two maybe three runs, instead a diving grab by the Warriors centerfielder ended the inning. That downer was followed by consecutive innings of sloppy defense and a close game was no more. Wantagh is recognized as a quality Nassau County baseball team because they don't make the sloppy plays. We WILL be joining them shortly in that category of respected teams, unfortunately it was not today.

Staying positive, Pablo Capellan hit a monstrous two run Home Run that had not only a movie on its flight but it was a double feature. One inning later T.J Humrich dialed long distance for the muscled-up Seahawks. It wasn't enough but it was a fun three runs. John Chilelli, Mike Kempel, Jon Brosnan and Daniel Heuser-Bastian all layed the lumber to the ball to inspire the Seahawks offense as the first game quickly nears.

March 19th

Hits Aplenty in Intrasquad Affair

Chilelli's Chili Dogs had the last laugh on Leidner's Loud Mouths 9-0 in an intrasquad whitewash. T.J. Humrich paced the Chili Dogs with a first inning Grand Slam. The Dogs put a 6 spot up in the first inning before adding several later on, including John Chilelli's 2nd Homerun in as many days. His rocket flight off Anthony Kowalsky definitely had a movie on it.

Joe Bearese picked up the win for the Dogs. Regardless of the score it was nice to have some warmer weather and a few laughs before the real deal starts this week. (For the curious, Levittown Division beat, and No-Hit, Malverne yesterday 10-0)

March 18th

Seahawks Outslug Spartans 8-6

The Seahawks bumped their Exhibition record to 3-0 after knocking off Elmont 8-6. Jon Brosnan picked up the win by pitching two scoreless innings. Brosnan was aided by an unconventional double play when centerfielder John Chilelli's throw back to first base caught a sleeping Elmont baserunner. Chilelli also excelled at the plate as he did a little yardwork. His fifth inning opposite field Homerun found a neat hiding place when it was deposited in the right field handball courts 350 feet away. Frank Intagliata also continued his early season hot hitting as he scorched a triple and a single. Together, Chilelli and Intagliata knocked in and scored seven of the eight runs scored. Hopefully, this hard hitting duo can set a nice pace for the Seahawks attack throughout the upcoming season.

March 17th

Seahawks Sweep Mules

The Seahawks concluded their two day affair with the Malverne Mules by grabbing a 7-4 victory. Pablo Capellan's double off the 355 Foot sign in the first inning was enough to give T.J. Humrich the win. Humrich fanned 5 out of 6 batters while the Seahawks offense pounded out 10 hits. John Chilelli rocked a triple that easily could have gone for an inside the park Homerun. Dustin Capriglione, Vinny Gentile and Frank Intagliata all hit hard shots to balance the attack. Pitchers C.J. Zahradka and Christian Petersen performed admirably in their first apearances of the year.

Seahawks Kick Mules 5-3 in Exhibition Opener

After two weeks of smacking wiffleballs and tennis balls the Seahawks finally got to lay their bats on some good old fashioned rawhide when they broke the seal on the 2005 exhibition season at Malverne High School.

The NY Yankees have the Grapefruit League and we have the Snowball League so hits were few and far between but when they did arrive they did so with style. Dan Cozzolino broke open the 3rd inning when he cleared the bases with a double to the left field fence. That double was preceded by a Pablo Capellan frozen rope down the third base line. Those two doubles, John Leidner's two foul ball Homeruns and Anthony Kowalsky's line drive single stood out as the hardest hit balls on the day.

On the hill, Justin Schomaker, Mike Kempel and Adam Kirell kept the Mules off balance for much of the afternoon. Schomaker battled through some early control problems to register a scoreless first. Kempel gave up only one hard hit ball in two innings of work to garner the win, while Kirell wrapped up the short affair with one solid inning.

Under the circumstances it was a 'nice', not great, start to the season.

The Top Twelve Teams will make the playoffs.
